The Relationship of Hyperuricemia and Metabolic Syndrome in Patients with Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus

Abstract
1
Objective : This study was to investigate the relationship of serum uric acid level and the frequency of metabolic syndrome in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus.
Methods : 548 patients with type 2 diabetes (342 men, 206 women) were enrolled and serum uric acid, lipid levels, BMI, waist/hip ratio, and medical history were analyzed.
Results : 86.5% of men and 95.9% of women showed a serum uric acid level of <_ 7 mg/&. 13.5% of men and 4.4% of women showed hyperuricemia. The mean age of hyperuricemic men and women were lower than that of the low or normal uric acid groups (men p<0.01, women p>0.05). 37.8% of men and 41.4% of women among the groups of patients who showed a serum uric acid level of <_ 7 mg/dL were compatible to the diagnostic criteria of metabolic syndrome. 71.4% of men and 77.8% of women among the groups of patients who showed hyperuricemia were compatible to the diagnostic criteria of metabolic syndrome.
Conclusion : We observed a significantly higher frequency of metabolic syndrome among patients with type 2 diabetes who had hyperuricemia than that of patients who had normal or low uric acid levels.
